The Numbers Game
For every child who goes to school in India, there
are thousands who have no access to an education. There are an estimated 192 million
children in India between the ages of 6 and 14 years. Of these, the Government
of India says 59 million are out of school.
India accounts for almost half
of the worlds 125 million out-of-school children. Although 95 percent have
access to a primary school within one kilometre of their home, only 85 percent
have access to a upper primary school within three kilometres of their home.
Nearly
50 percent of enrolled children drop out of school by class V; for every 100 girls
that enrol in school in rural India, only 18 reach class VIII, nine reach class
IX and only one makes it to class XII.
